In an industry where tech trends come and go, Aimpoint has done what few companies ever achieve: hit the 50-year mark without losing its edge. The Swedish optic maker that gave the world the red dot sight celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, and its dominance shows no signs of slowing down.

From a Hunter’s Idea to a Global Standard

The story started in 1974 when a Swedish hunter developed the first prototype red dot sight. By 1975, Aimpoint was officially formed under the family-owned Sandberg Development. The company’s mission was simple but ambitious: build a sight that made shooters faster and more accurate, and tough enough to survive anything the field could throw at it.

That vision turned into a product line synonymous with uncompromising durability. Aimpoint optics are torture-tested to survive arctic freezes, scorching desert heat, and even complete submersion. No gimmicks, no shortcuts, just rugged glass that works when your life might depend on it.

The U.S. Army’s M68: A Turning Point

Aimpoint’s big moment in the U.S. came in 1997, when it secured a contract to supply 100,000 CompM sights to the U.S. Army. Designated the M68 Close Combat Optic (M68CCO), this deal cemented Aimpoint’s reputation as the military-grade red dot.

M68 Close Combat Optic

Since then, more than two million Aimpoint optics have been issued to American forces, and countless more have found their way into the hands of police, elite special operations units, competitive shooters, and armed citizens worldwide.

50 Years of Setting the Bar

“This year marks a major milestone for all of Aimpoint and we are only getting started,” says Thane Smith, President of Aimpoint Inc. “As we celebrate throughout 2025, we are reminded of the legacy of innovation and commitment to the highest quality standards for providing optics to support every mission from personal protection to combat zones worldwide.”

From its earliest days, Aimpoint built its reputation on three things:

  • Speed – lightning-fast target acquisition
  • Accuracy – parallax-free shooting that works in any light
  • Durability – optics that survive when others fail

And that formula hasn’t changed. Fifty years later, Aimpoint remains the benchmark by which all other red dots are judged.

Why Aimpoint Still Leads

Whether it’s riding on a duty rifle, a backcountry hunting carbine, or an everyday carry pistol, Aimpoint red dots have earned their place as the go-to choice for professionals and enthusiasts who refuse to compromise.

Half a century later, the original red dot is still the gold standard, trusted from the battlefield to the backcountry.

Our Take

Aimpoint’s 50th anniversary isn’t just a milestone, it’s a reminder that rugged, battle-proven gear never goes out of style. In an era where micro dots and budget optics dominate the market, Aimpoint continues to develop optics that simply don’t quit.

Sure, Holosun may have won the civilian price war, and Trijicon holds the crown for the pistol red dot, but Aimpoint still owns the high ground when it comes to hard-use duty rifles. If you’ve ever trained with professionals or run a carbine class in the rain, mud, or snow, you know Aimpoints just keep running, year after year, battery after battery.

The bigger question heading into 2025 is whether Aimpoint can maintain its leadership as more shooters demand enclosed-emitter micro dots for rifles and pistols. Given Aimpoint’s track record, don’t be surprised if their next innovation defines the next 50 years of red dot tech.

For now, Aimpoint’s message is clear: half a century later, they’re still here, still relevant, and still building the optic that everyone else is measured against.
