WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 21, 2025) – Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) released the following statement regarding its Worth v. Jacobson lawsuit:
Summary
Minnesota law prevented adults under the age of 21 from applying for a carry license, which made it a crime for peaceable adults to carry firearms in public for self-defense and lawful purposes. FPC challenged this law in a federal lawsuit, resulting in a resounding victory at the district court as well as a unanimous Eighth Circuit decision in favor of FPC and its co-plaintiffs. Today, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear Minnesota’s petition for review, which leaves in place the lower courts’ decisions and allows the injunctions against the law to take effect.
What We’re Working to Achieve
The Worth case is part of FPC’s high-impact strategic litigation program, FPC Law, aimed at eliminating immoral laws and creating a world of maximal liberty. This case is part of FPC’s initiative to eliminate unconstitutional age-based restrictions throughout the United States. Through this lawsuit, we achieved:
- A permanent injunction preventing the State of Minnesota from enforcing the age-based carry ban;
- Federal district and appellate court decisions properly applying the law and relevant history to hold that 18-to-20-year-olds are part of “the People” under the Second Amendment and as such have a right to carry firearms outside the home; and,
- Important findings and precedents that can be used to support similar cases around the country.
