From choosing the type of firearm you carry to deciding the most comfortable concealment options, there are many factors to consider when using your CCW for self-defense purposes. One aspect that many gun owners tend to overlook is concealed carry insurance. To help decide if this type of liability coverage is ideal for you, let’s explore a few pros and cons of CCW insurance.

CCW Insurance: Pros and Cons

Legal Fees Covered

When using your firearm for self-defense, it’s important to understand that you can face criminal charges or even civil lawsuits. In turn, this can lead to some costly expenses such as attorney, court, bond, and witness fees. One of the biggest advantages of concealment insurance is that these legal expenses are covered.

Depending on the insurance provider you choose, you may find that you have either limited or unlimited coverage. To find the best option and policy that fits your needs, it is recommended to do your own personal research.

Access to Legal Advice

For many people, the legal system can often be a confusing and overwhelming world that can be difficult to navigate. One great benefit of self-defense coverage is that many insurance companies offer legal advice. This type of guidance can help a person better understand their rights and make informed decisions.

A few examples of companies that offer this advice include United States Conceal Carry Association, CCW Safe, and U.S. LawShield.

Ability to Choose

Another advantage that CCW insurance offers is allowing its policyholders to choose their own attorney. This may seem like a small feature, but it can have a big impact. Knowing that you have the power to decide can really increase your confidence.

Insurance companies may require your attorney to be investigated to ensure they have the proper experience to handle your case. However, it’s worth noting that some companies, such as CCW Safe, may have a selection of attorneys for you to pick from. But that does not mean they will not at least consider an attorney you have chosen.

Peace of Mind

Many gun owners find that having CCW insurance is beneficial because it keeps them prepared for the financial and legal consequences of using their firearm for self-defense. This not only helps limit stress but can give you peace of mind that you are covered. That alone makes this coverage well worth having.

Invalid in Some States

One of the biggest disadvantages to consider about self-defense coverage is that it may be invalid in your state. For reference, states such as New York, New Jersey, and Washington do not allow CCW insurance.

In fact, in 2019, New York banned this liability coverage, claiming that it promotes violence and exploits consumers’ fears. It is extremely important that, before purchasing a policy, you research your state and local laws.

Cost

Depending on the level of coverage and the company you choose, CCW insurance ranges from $150 to $400 per year. For many people, this can be considered costly. So, it is recommended to research different plans that can better fit your budget. Many companies have basic, mid-tier, and premium coverage plans from which you can choose.

Coverage Restrictions

Every company will have its own set of limitations and restrictions on your coverage that are important to consider. Some common restrictions include using your firearm for self-defense in gun-free zones, for premeditated crimes, and accidental discharges. Other exclusions can include using your firearm while intoxicated and not following orders given by law enforcement.

CCW Insurance is an Important Personal Decision

Many people have concealed carry insurance because it takes away financial burdens, gives you access to legal advice, allows you to choose your attorney, and, most importantly, gives you peace of mind that you are covered. While many advantages come with liability insurance, factors such as cost, coverage restrictions, and being invalid in certain states are also important to consider.

You are the one who will make the ultimate decision if concealed carry insurance is ideal for you. To make the best decision for you and your needs, do your research and educate yourself on different policy options.
