We might finally be rid of Tim Walz, the failed vice presidential candidate and two-term Minnesota governor who not only has never seen an anti-gun proposal he didn’t support, but spent more time pushing for tampons in elementary school boys bathrooms than he did leading his state.

On January 5, Walz, who had actively been campaigning for a third term, suddenly announced that he would not be running for reelection.

Minnesota readers aside, Walz didn’t come to most of our attention until Democrats tossed President Joe Biden aside in the runup to the 2024 presidential elections, replacing him with Vice President Kamala Harris. Following that poor choice, Democrats made an even worse one, naming Walz, derisively called “Tampon Timmy” by many, to round out their ticket.

The move was ostensibly to try to pull some of the white male vote from President Donald Trump, who was running for his second term. But while the campaign tried to portray Walz as a man’s man, it soon became obvious that he was just a goofball in a man’s body.

Sent on a pheasant hunting trip to try to impress “outdoors” folks and get their vote, Walz was about as at home in the field as you or I would be in the under-construction White House ballroom. Instead of garnering favor, Walz was too klutzy to load his shotgun properly, further sealing his status as a laughing stock.

Since August 27, when a crazed trans man killed two students and wounded 17 others by firing into the chapel at the Annunciation Catholic Church during the first mass of the school year, Walz has spent most of his time trying to capitalize on the event. His main emphasis has been on banning so-called “assault weapons,” common semi-auto rifles owned by thousands of lawful Minnesotans and millions of Americans. Additionally, he constantly pushed for re-enactment of the state’s binary trigger ban, which was recently struck down by a district court, a requirement for serial numbers on guns, safe storage requirements, gun safety training and the creation of a civil commitment division in the Attorney General’s Office.

Walz’s latest exploit involving firearms was a failed attempt to call a special legislative session in order to try to pass those restrictions and more. Fortunately for Minnesota gun owners, Republicans in the state legislature stood firm, scuttling Walz’s attempt at a special session.

In response, on December 16, an angry Walz defied the legislature by signing two executive orders concerning firearms. Neither of the orders has amounts to much, and neither will likely result in any real action.

Unfortunately for Walz, while he was nearly solely focused on trying to infringe on the Second Amendment rights of lawful Minnesota gun owners, Somali migrants in the state were robbing the treasury blind, to the tune of billions of dollars, through fraudulent means. That revelation quickly took over much of the news cycle and brought many calls from the right for Walz to resign as governor.

Ultimately, it was Walz’s looking aside and letting immigrants steal the state blind that led to his downfall, not his zeal to constantly push forward anti-gun proposals. Despite that, his not running for reelection is something all gun owners in the North Star State should celebrate.
