Chris Coons claimed Trump is pursuing Obama-style nuclear deal involving sanctions relief

(Reuters)

President Donald Trump on Monday denied giving Iran any concessions or engaging in talks with the Islamic Republic’s leaders, slamming Sen. Chris Coons (D., Del.) for suggesting that the Trump administration is offering Iran a deal with billions in incentives and sanctions relief.

“Tell phony Democrat Senator Chris Coons that I am not offering Iran ANYTHING, unlike Obama, who paid them $Billions,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nor am I even talking to them since we totally OBLITERATED their Nuclear Facilities.”

Trump’s post comes a day after Coons said in a Fox News interview that Trump is likely “moving towards negotiation and offering Iran a deal that looks somewhat similar to the Iran deal that was offered by Obama: tens of billions of dollars of incentives and reduced sanctions in exchange for abandoning their nuclear program.”

Coons was referring to media reports that say the Trump administration is considering offering economic incentives for Iran in exchange for the regime giving up on enriching uranium. The administration sent mixed messages last month about whether it would allow Iran to continue enriching uranium as part of a deal.

The president last week ordered strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, dealing a crippling blow to the country’s nuclear ambitions. Israel’s Atomic Energy Commission assessed the Fordow Uranium Enrichment Plant as “inoperable” and said the strike “set back Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years.”

Trump announced Friday that he has “dropped all work on sanction relief” for Iran after Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei condemned the United States and falsely claimed victory over Israel. Trump warned that “Iran has to get back into the World Order flow, or things will only get worse for them.”
