Eugene Daniels, former president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, says Trump is racist for wanting to stop crime
Eugene Daniels, the former Politico journalist who was (and still is) widely praised as a credible and objective source of information, is thriving in his new role as host of a weekend show on MSNBC, the failing left-wing network where news of Kamala Harris’s defeat in 2024 was met with disbelief on account of the fact that Queen Latifah had endorsed her.
In a performance reminiscent of Joy Reid, the former MSNBC host who was fired earlier this year for constantly stoking racial grievance, Daniels suggested that Donald Trump was a racist for trying to combat crime in Washington, D.C. “One of the things that we have seen over and over, from the president, from his team … They seem to hold their harshest criticism sometimes for cities that are majority black and brown,” he said on MSNBC’s The Weekend during a recent interview with D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser, who agreed that Trump’s racism was a problem—unlike the crime in her city, which was under control, thanks in no small part to fraudulent data.
Daniels covered the Harris campaign for Politico while also making a name for himself by wearing outlandish outfits that some described as “fashionable” and others described as “flamboyant futuristic tinpot dictator chic.” He interviewed Kamala Harris several times and asked if she thought Trump was guilty of “irredeemable racism.” Daniels also moderated numerous events for the Virginia-based news blog, including its “Confronting Inequality” series. He was profiled in several publications, which never failed to mention his love of Beyoncé or to commend the journalist for having a “fashion sense that mirrors his bold style of reporting.” As president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, the controversial left-wing activist group, Daniel repeatedly sparred with the Trump administration but was widely regarded as an ineffectual leader.
Despite taking a hosting job at a notoriously partisan network, Daniels has repeatedly insisted that journalists are honest purveyors of truth. “Journalists are not on anyone’s side,” he said last year at a conference hosted by the National Association of Realtors. While draped in a silk blouse and opulent white dictator’s uniform at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this year, Daniels asserted (without evidence) that journalists “take seriously the heavy responsibility of being stewards of the public’s trust,” and do not consider themselves “the opposition” when Republicans hold power. His admirers in the D.C. press corps have touted his commitment to “rebuilding trust in journalism.”

Daniels’s cohosts at MSNBC, Jonathan Capehart and Jacqueline Alemany, are also partisan Democrats pretending to be journalists. Capehart is a former Washington Post columnist who made headlines earlier this year while moderating a panel discussion among candidates running for chair of the Democratic National Committee. “How many of you believe that racism and misogyny played a role in VP Harris’s defeat?” he asked the candidates. When all eight contenders immediately raised their hands, Capehart commended them for answering correctly. “That’s good, you all pass,” he said.
Alemany, a former reporter at the Post, is a banking scion whose husband, Jake Levine, announced last week he was running for Congress in California (as a Democrat, obviously). She praised her husband’s decision to challenge an incumbent Democrat, congressman Brad Sherman, who has been attacked by liberal activists for supporting Israel, and vowing to “uphold the professional standards of independence that my work requires.”
Levine is a professional climate activist who has worked for prominent Democrats including former president Barack Obama, California governor Gavin Newsom, and former president Joe Biden. Former Rep. Henry Waxman (D., Calif.) attended the couple’s engagement party in 2023, which was cohosted by Jamie Gorelick, a Democratic lawyer who served as deputy attorney general under president Bill Clinton. On social media, Levine has expressed enthusiasm for electric scooters, the “Squad,” and Colin Kaepernick.
MSNBC continues to suffer from historically low ratings. Even the network’s most popular shows rarely draw enough viewers under the age of 55 to fill an average-sized NFL stadium. Daniels, Capehart, and Alemany took over the weekend hosting slot formerly held by Symone Sanders, the former Kamala Harris adviser, and Alicia Menendez, the daughter of Democratic senator and convicted felon “Bullion Bob” Menendez.
