United States President Donald Trump told the Financial Times that he could “take the oil in Iran” and seize the export hub of Kharg Island. At the same time, Iran has said that the proposals made by the U.S. in order to facilitate a ceasefire are “unrealistic.”

“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump said. “It would also mean we had to be there [in Kharg Island] for a while.” The White House and the U.S. State Department didn’t immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

Trump also commented on Monday morning with a warning that the U.S. would “completely” obliterate Iran’s electric generating plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island if the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz is not “immediately” reopened and a peace deal is not reached “shortly.” Iran has not yet commented on Trump’s latest remarks, according to a report by CNBC.

Trump also said his favorite thing to do would be to “take the oil” in Iran. “My favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some stupid people back in the U.S. say: ‘Why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people.”

These wars have all been about the oil in the end.

The Washington Post reported Saturday night that the Pentagon was preparing for weeks of potential ground conflict in Iran with around 3,500 troops arriving in the region on Friday. Thousands of soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division have also been ordered to support the war effort. –CNBC

Tehran has described the U.S. peace proposals as “unrealistic” on Monday and fired waves of missiles at Israel.
