Josh Duhamel is ready to set down roots somewhere other than Los Angeles.
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, the 53-year-old actor discussed season two of “Ransom Canyon,” as well as his decision to sell his L.A. home following his move to North Dakota.
“Well, we still have a house in Los Angeles that we because I have a 12-year-old son who goes to school there and will be there until he’s done with school,” he said. “So we go back and forth between Fargo, North Dakota and Los Angeles. The house that I just sold was the house that was sort of my transition space between when I got divorced and when I started a new family.”
He explained that after “renting it for the last couple of years,” he decided to sell it, adding, he realized he would “rather put that money in North Dakota.”

The “Life as We Know It” star sold the 3,310-square-foot $2.9 million home in Encino earlier this month, a little over a year after he spoke to Parade about his decision to move out of Los Angeles to spend time in Minnesota, living an off-the-grid lifestyle in a home he spent 15 years building.
“The closest store is 40 miles away,” he explained to the outlet. “Once we get there, it’s really about everybody taking care of each other — making memories, spending time with family and friends.”

Duhamel lives in Fargo, North Dakota with his wife, Audra Mari, and their two kids – son Shepard, 2, and daughter Rocca, who is two months old – with his 12-year-old son, Axl, whom he shares with his ex Fergie, joining them from time to time. The family will often spend time at their off-the-grid cabin in Minnesota.
In addition to allowing his family to “get back to the basics,” and his children to grow up exploring nature rather than being on their iPads all day, Duhamel says living an off-the-grid lifestyle in their Minnesota getaway has helped him prepare for his role in “Ransom Canyon.”
“I think that when I first met with April Blair, the showrunner, I was at my cabin, literally out there on my tractor doing something, and I was kind of in that headspace already,” he said. “There are a lot of similarities. I don’t have a horse, I don’t have cattle, but I do have a lot tractors, a lot ranchy stuff out there and I think that I sort of live this life, or something closely adjacent to it.”
He added: “Anyway, so I felt like I really sort of understood the love of your land, the legacy, taking care of the people around you, all those things that I think are sort of the same themes as ranch life. And I think that that, they, do sort of inform one another.”
The show is a neo-Western drama on Netflix starring Duhamel and Minka Kelly, and follows the lives of three rival ranching families in the Texas Hill Country.

In the show, Duhamel plays the owner of Double K Ranch, one of the biggest ranches in the canyon, who in season one is still grieving the loss of his wife and son, and is willing to do anything to protect his family’s land and legacy.

Season one of the show saw a budding romance between Duhamel and Kelly’s characters, who plays his wife’s best friend who has always had feelings for him.
“Constant sort of balance that we’re trying to strike on the show in that I want to make sure that we keep it rough and sort of gritty and cowboy Western and then there’s forces that want to pull it way into the romance, which I get,” he said. “But it’s finding that balance between the two so it’s still a Western, and it still has that kind of gritty Western vibe.”
