Ryan Gosling’s family-first philosophy reshaped his Hollywood career: experts

Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, marking the latest chapter in a career evolution that the actor has linked directly to fatherhood.

Earlier this month, Gosling, 45, made a surprise appearance during Marvel Studios’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con where it was announced that he will be starring as the titular motorcycle-riding supernatural hero in a standalone “Ghost Rider” movie slated for release in 2028.

Gosling’s casting comes as the three-time Oscar nominee continues to embrace blockbuster franchises after spending years building his reputation in some of Hollywood’s darkest, most critically acclaimed dramas.

The actor has previously shared that his pivot toward lighter, more mainstream projects was intentional, explaining that his priorities changed after becoming a parent. Gosling shares daughters Esmeralda, 11, and Amada, 10, with his longtime partner, Eva Mendes, 52.

During a 2024 interview with the Wall Street Journal, Gosling said he avoids psychologically heavy roles because he wants to be emotionally present for Mendes and their daughters.

“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” Gosling said. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first.”

While speaking with Fox News Digital, PR expert Sarah Schmidt shared her view that Gosling’s family-first approach has reshaped not only the types of roles he is taking, but the purpose behind them.

“He began picking lighter roles to keep his mood stable for his family and also create art that they can be a part of,” the president of Interdependence PR said.

Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends for Rentrak, said Gosling’s evolving priorities reflect a broader pattern among actors whose careers change alongside their personal lives.

“It does feel as though he is gravitating toward movies that his kids could actually see and enjoy,” Dergarabedian said. “That kind of evolution is not unique as we have seen it with other actors as they get older, start families, and begin making choices that reflect where they are in life, how they see the world, and how they want to be perceived both personally and professionally.”

Gosling’s shift toward family-friendly entertainment signals a full-circle career moment for the actor, who made his debut as a child performer on the Disney Channel’s “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club.” He later appeared in the children’s TV shows “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and “Goosebumps.”

During a 2011 interview with the New York Times, Gosling recalled that he decided to pursue “serious acting” at age 19. After making his mainstream breakthrough in the hit 2004 romantic drama “The Notebook,” the Canada native went on to establish himself as one of Hollywood’s most respected dramatic actors with critically acclaimed films including “Half Nelson,” “Blue Valentine,” “Drive,” “The Place Beyond the Pines,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “First Man.”

In recent years, Gosling has charted a different course with starring roles in audience-friendly movies including “Barbie,” “The Fall Guy,” and “Project Hail Mary” and his upcoming turns in “Star Wars: Starfighter” and “Ghost Rider.”

Ryan McCormick, co-founder of Goldman McCormick PR, said he believes Gosling has earned the creative freedom to balance blockbuster franchises with prestige films.

“Ryan has not only built a career of acclaimed roles, those films are often box office successes,” McCormick told Fox News Digital. “He has attained a rare status where he can do a sandbox film like ‘Ghost Rider’ and also take a dramatic or independent role without any one performance limiting his future choices.”

Dergarabedian noted that Gosling’s career has long defied easy categorization, citing his performances in 2011’s “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and 2016’s “La La Land.”

“Gosling has always been far more versatile than any single role would suggest,” Dergarabedian said. “He has shown he can do comedy, as he did so memorably in ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.'”

“Of course he proved he could carry a musical with ‘La La Land,'” he added.

Dergarabedian pointed to Gosling’s starring role in Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” as a pivotal moment that expanded audiences’ perception of him beyond romantic leads and demonstrated his ability to tackle darker, action-oriented material.

“You really cannot put Gosling in a box. He has been able to move between genres and tones with a level of ease that very few actors can match,” Dergarabedian said. “All that being said, you can definitely see a shift in tone at this stage of his career.”

Gosling previously shared that “La La Land” was the first project he chose that reflected his changing priorities after becoming a father. While speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Gosling recalled thinking of how Esmeralda and Amada would enjoy watching him prepare for the role.

“It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing,'” Gosling said.

The philosophy carried over to 2023’s “Barbie,” which Gosling said resonated with his daughters, who were already immersed in the world of Barbie dolls before he signed on to play Ken.

“Their interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration,” Gosling said. “I thought they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when it happened, so the fact that I was going off to work to make one too, we just felt like we were aligned.”

Though some fans initially criticized Gosling’s casting as Ken, arguing he was too old to portray Barbie’s iconic counterpart, the actor ultimately won over audiences with a performance that became one of the film’s biggest highlights. “Barbie” went on to gross more than $1.4 billion worldwide and Gosling earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor, cementing the film as both a commercial and critical triumph.

Schmidt told Fox News Digital that she believes the film fundamentally changed the trajectory of Gosling’s career.

“Gosling proved that just because he began his career as a critically acclaimed darling does not mean that he cannot also be an international franchise and blockbuster star,” she said.

“‘Barbie’ paved the way,” Schmidt continued. “Prior to that, Gosling was a serious actor who occasionally moonlighted in a rom-com. As it turns out, Ken can carry a billion-dollar movie. He was funny and self-aware, and it did not cost him any of his hard-earned credibility.”

Gosling has continued to embrace projects that his daughters can share with him. While promoting “Project Hail Mary,” he revealed that Esmeralda and Amada occasionally voiced his alien co-star Rocky during rehearsals and became some of the sci-fi adventure movie’s earliest viewers.

“Sometimes when I was working and I needed to sort of switch things up or whatever, my kids would come in and I had an earpiece in my ear and they would talk for Rocky, so I could talk to them as Rocky,” Gosling told People in March.

“And there’s some moments in the movie where I’m laughing or I’m just so charmed by him, which is like, it’s actually my kids talking to me and helping me out,” Gosling continued.

“They’ve seen many cuts of this film,” he added of his daughters. “They’ve given me many notes.”

Marvel’s “Ghost Rider” marks the latest chapter in the blockbuster era that Gosling has spent years building. Gosling’s role as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in the superhero movie will also reunite him with director Shawn Levy after the two previously collaborated on “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which hits theaters in May 2027.

“Wow, is this really happening?” Gosling told the crowd at Comic-Con after being unveiled as Ghost Rider by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

“As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time,” he said.

Schmidt told Fox News Digital that she believes Gosling has found a way to balance artistic credibility with commercial success without losing sight of the priorities that reshaped his career.

“He became a dad first, actor second,” Schmidt said. “He is building a filmography legacy that his kids can be part of and proud of.”

Meanwhile, Dergarabedian said he believes Gosling’s recent choices have also cemented his place among Hollywood’s biggest stars.

“He has become a go-to actor for huge, audience-friendly studio films and major franchises because he occupies such a unique position within the public eye,” Dergarabedian said. “He has credibility, he has charm, he has range, and he has that elusive movie-star quality that is increasingly rare today.”
