“Where art thou, Romeo?” Apparently, in SIG’s world, Romeo is everywhere. The SIG Romeo series of red dots has grown and evolved quite a bit. The Romeo5 has become the standard for budget red dots. Alongside the Romeo5, SIG also released the Romeo-MSR, another favorite budget-friendly red dot that seems to directly compete with the Romeo5.

Then, SIG went and introduced Gen 2 variants of both the Romeo5 and Romeo-MSR. Both are simple, compact red dots that aim to solve the same problem. Price-wise, they’re nearly next to each other, so what’s the difference? That’s what we aim to find out today by comparing and contrasting the two.

I’ve now used both quite a bit and have my thoughts.

The Romeo5 and Romeo-MSR – The Gen 2 Rise

Let’s break down each optic by a variety of categories to see which is better and which is worth your hard-earned cash.

Price

So what’s the price difference? Well, it can vary because SIG has quite a few different variants of the Romeo5 Gen 2. The base model with a red reticle runs for about 120 dollars. The Romeo-MSR Gen 2 is about $100, so the price difference between the two is only $ 20.

However, they also produce the XDR model, which uses a AAA battery and has multiple reticles. It’s about 200 dollars. Then we have the Romeo5 Gen 2 Elite, which has four different reticles, including a ballistic drop reticle that’s quite nice. It retails for around 200 dollars as well. Then the X Model, which has one reticle and the Triple A battery compartment.

Inside this family there are options with FDE finishes, Rose models, and green dots that can vary the price by tens of dollars, typically running between $130 and $150. Ultimately, the MSR is slightly cheaper overall than the base model and significantly cheaper than the upper tier of the Romeo5 Gen 2.

I will say, as you’ll see throughout this comparison, the extra 20 dollars you’ll spend on the Romeo5 Gen 2 is worth it.

Clarity

The difference in clarity isn’t radical. The Romeo5 Gen 2 has a less detectable notch filter, but the Romeo-MSR notch filter isn’t bad. The MSR has a slightly bluer tint that’s visible and apparent.

When I noticed the biggest difference is in the dot clarity. The Romeo-MSR isn’t quite a perfect circle, or as crisp as the Romeo5 Gen 2. The Romeo5 Gen 2 provides a much crisper reticle overall. This translates to better magnifier performance and better night vision use.

The Mount

The Romeo-MSR uses a fairly standard mount that’s a small aluminum box with a simple, small bolt that acts as your recoil boss. It’s the budget standard we’ve seen time and time again. It’s fine overall, but don’t expect anything fancy.

The Romeo5 Gen 2 has a very nice mount. It even comes in different heights, giving you lower 3rd cowitness, absolute cowitness, or 1.93. Additionally, the mount has a massive bolt that pins the optic to the upper receiver. Add 65 inch-pounds of torque, and it’s staying put.

Both optics use the Aimpoint T1/T2 footprint, and you can always change the mount if you don’t care for it.

The Controls

The SIG Romeo-MSR uses a dial to cycle through its settings. A lot of people really like dials. They do provide a quick visual idea of the setting your dot is using. It’s easy to see the NVG settings, and the knurled design allows the swap to be easy with gloves or sweaty hands.

The Romeo5 Gen 2 uses buttons. I like buttons. They sit lower, out of the way, giving a clearer sight picture. I know what’s up and down and to press until I get what I want. I don’t think one is an advantage over the other, just different preferences.

Durability?

The Romeo5 and Romeo-MSR Gen 2 models are both IPX7-rated optics. The Romeo5 Gen 2 feels beefier and stronger, and the mount is most assuredly stronger. However, in my shooting, dropping, and general use of both optics, they maintain zero, they don’t flicker or fail, and they can take some abuse.

If I did a dedicated torture test, I’m sure the Romeo5 would last longer, but for the budget optic category I don’t think most people are looking to beat the absolute hell out of their optics. I think 99% of shooters will never see a difference.

Which is Better?

The slightly more expensive optic scores higher in most categories. It even offers MOTAC, so it auto-shuts off when left stationary, but fires back up when it detects movement. For a little extra money, I think the Romeo5 Gen 2 is where I would land.

With that said, if you’re squeezing every nickel, the Romeo-MSR is the way to go. It’s surprisingly good for such an affordable optic.

If you’re a Juliet, finding your Romeo isn’t all that hard.
