Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik said Wednesday during an “Everything Music” interview with producer Rick Beato that he refuses to lecture concertgoers about politics because fans from across the ideological spectrum come together for the same reason: to see a show.
While discussing why he believes live music remains important during divided times, Rzeznik said political and religious differences are not what matters when he takes the stage.
“I got people, fans, friends from every walk of life, every political stripe, everything,” he said. “And I always stress, we got one thing in common because we’re living in weird times. We got one thing in common, and that’s we’re all here to see a show, and I’m not going to lecture people about anything.”

Entertainment commentator Christian Toto told Fox News Digital that artists can pay a price with their audiences when performances turn into political forums, particularly when celebrity political commentary is already widespread.
“Artists do risk alienating fans when they get on a soap box. That’s always been true, but it’s even more so today. Why? We’re inundated with political screeds, particularly from the rich and famous. In many cases, the arguments being shared are one-dimensional and poorly thought out,” Toto said.
“Plus, they’re rarely spoken to change hearts or minds,” he continued. “The commentary is typically angry and filled with partisan talking points. What does ‘Free Palestine’ mean to someone who questions that community’s embrace of violence?”

Toto pointed to the cost of attending major concerts as another reason artists could frustrate audiences by devoting stage time to politics.
“Concert tickets are insanely high in 2026,” he said. “Imagine forking over so much money and then, mid-concert, you get a political lecture. Who wants that? Kudos to Rzeznik for understanding that simple truth, one that eludes many ego-driven rockers.”
Rzeznik’s approach mirrors comments Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger made earlier this year. Fox News Digital reported in July that Jagger viewed his job during concerts as helping audiences forget their problems for a few hours rather than preaching to them.

Explaining his approach to performing, Jagger made clear he did not believe audiences came to see him for political instruction.
“I don’t want to lecture them,” Jagger said.
Other rock stars have faced a different reception after bringing politics into performances. In June, Bruce Springsteen and The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson faced backlash from some concertgoers following political remarks onstage.
Rzeznik told Beato he wants Goo Goo Dolls fans to instead leave a concert feeling better than when they arrived.
“I’m going to play a bunch of songs that, you know, and we’re all going to leave here, and we’re going to be happier and better for it. That’s it,” Rzeznik said.

The comments came amid renewed attention for Goo Goo Dolls and their 1998 hit “Iris.” The band released a reimagined version of the song with Steve Aoki in March and spent summer touring with Neon Trees. An anniversary edition of the band’s 1998 album “Dizzy Up the Girl,” which featured “Iris,” is scheduled for release Oct. 2.
Fox News Digital reached out to Rzeznik for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
