Resolution, which passed the House 285-98, came hours before Trump’s meeting with socialist NYC mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani
Ninety-eight House Democrats on Friday voted against a resolution “denouncing the horrors of socialism” that came just hours before President Donald Trump met with socialist New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
The resolution passed 285-98, with only 86 Democrats voting in favor. Two Democrats voted “present.” No Republicans opposed the resolution.
The measure states that “Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States,” characterizing socialism as an ideology that “necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships.”
Mamdani’s rise and mayoral victory could mark a turning point for the Democratic Party as its establishment begins to embrace far-left radicals. After months of progressive pressure, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) backed the socialist shortly before the November 4 election. Former president Barack Obama said shortly after Mamdani’s victory that the socialist mayor-elect is “part of a vision for the future.”
As a New York state assemblyman, Mamdani called for “seizing the means of production,” and he declared during his victory speech that “there is no problem too large for the government to solve.” During the campaign, he advocated for government-run grocery stores and taxpayer-funded busing, childcare, and rent freezes, called for increased taxation of white people, and provoked deep concern among Jewish New Yorkers by saying he stands by “the idea” of the anti-Semitic slogan “globalize the intifada.”
Mamdani’s victory has also emboldened his allies in the Democratic Socialists of America, who have either launched or are considering primary challenges against establishment Democrats, including Jeffries. Socialist New York state senator Jabari Brisport this week warned Gov. Kathy Hochul (D.) that she has to get in line with a socialist agenda on childcare or lose her reelection bid next year. News also broke this week that Mamdani threw his support behind a socialist New York State Assembly candidate who blamed 9/11 on America.
The Friday resolution denounced Mamdani and his allies’ ideology as “fundamentally and necessarily opposed” to U.S. Founding principles, noting that socialism has “repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide.”
