Almost as bad as the Nazis
A top aide to Graham Platner, the Nazi-adjacent Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Maine, belonged to a depraved cult-like entity with ties to one of history’s worst genocides, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
Joe Calvello, the senior adviser who orchestrated Platner’s widely celebrated campaign rollout, played lacrosse in high school and in college at the University of Massachusetts. The Free Beacon exposed Calvello’s ties to organized lacrosse in 2023 when he served as communications director to Sen. John Fetterman (D., Pa.) and again in 2024 when Calvello left to work for Brandon Johnson, the extreme left-wing and crime-loving mayor of Chicago.
Records indicate that Calvello held an active position on the UMass men’s lacrosse team from 2011 to 2014. The undersized (5-foot-8, 155-pounds) face-off specialist achieved a high-ranking role in the organization, starting all 13 games his senior year and leading the Minutemen to a semi-respectable 7-6 record.

For those unfamiliar with the loathsome subculture, lacrosse is a niche “sport” that predominates in the elite private schools and preparatory academies of New England and the Mid-Atlantic. These lacrosse-friendly institutions are rife with toxic liberal elitism and have nurtured the radical ideologies of some of the Democratic Party’s most obnoxious candidates.
Katie Porter, the rage-filled staff abuser running for governor of California, prepared at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. The elite boarding school has one of the oldest lacrosse teams in the country, dating back to 1882. Beto O’Rourke, the entitled blowhard who thought he was “born” to be president, attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. Platner, who is backed by socialist Bernie Sanders and has fashioned himself as a rugged man of the people, attended the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, where tuition runs upwards of $75,000 per year.
Abdul El-Sayed, another Sanders-endorsed Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Michigan, played on the men’s club lacrosse team at the University of Michigan. This may partially explain his passionate support for Hamas terrorists. “My helmet is hanging up in my office,” he told USA Lacrosse magazine in 2018. “I’ll always look back at that experience as one of my fondest.”
Lacrosse has been denounced by both sides of the political spectrum. Conservatives prefer real sports played by men, whereas liberals abhor its lack of diversity and its association with “the history of Indigenous cultural erasure and appropriation in the United States.” The sport was invented by Native Americans, which means it has links to the “genocide” allegedly perpetrated by European settlers. The game in its original form was unspeakably barbaric; gruesome injuries and death were not uncommon. New rules were eventually adopted to make it more civilized, but these efforts were heavily influenced by elites in Canada—one of the world’s most perfidious nations.
Platner’s senior advisers have been fleeing the campaign in recent weeks. His campaign manager stepped down this week, and his former political director, Genevieve McDonald, resigned earlier this month after learning of the candidate’s sordid past. Platner came under fire for a series of old Reddit posts attacking black people, rural Americans, police officers, homosexuals, and rape victims. It was subsequently revealed that Platner had a Nazi skull and crossbones tattooed on his chest.
Many found the revelations shocking. But that was before we learned one of his top aides played lacrosse. Now it all makes sense.
