President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning dismissed claims that he cut short his trip to the G7 Summit in Canada to arrange a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, insisting that he wants “a real end” to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
“Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that.”
“I didn’t say I was looking for a ceasefire,” Trump told CBS News’s Jennifer Jacobs aboard Air Force One. The president insisted that he wants “a real end” to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, saying the regime must give up “entirely” on its efforts to develop atomic weapons.
Since hostilities broke out early Friday morning, Israel and Iran have exchanged hundreds of strikes, with the Jewish state hitting Tehran’s nuclear facilities and military infrastructure. The Israel Defense Forces eliminated at least 9 top Iranian nuclear scientists and 20 senior military leaders, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander in chief Hossein Salami and Iranian Armed Forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri.
Trump, who on Monday urged Iranian civilians to evacuate Tehran, returned from his trip to the G7 Summit a day early, saying he wanted to stay “well versed” on the Israel-Iran conflict. He reportedly told the National Security Council to convene in the Situation Room by the time he landed in Washington, D.C.
“I have not reached out to Iran for ‘Peace Talks’ in any way, shape, or form,” Trump said in another post early Tuesday morning. “This is just more HIGHLY FABRICATED, FAKE NEWS! If they want to talk, they know how to reach me. They should have taken the deal that was on the table—Would have saved a lot of lives!!!”
