There has never been a better time to own a suppressor. That sentence used to be something writers typed out of obligation, a soft opener before laying out all the bureaucratic hurdles standing between you and a can on your barrel. Not anymore. In 2026, the process is genuinely straightforward, the government fees have been eliminated, and ATF approval times have dropped from years to days. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to make your first suppressor purchase, that moment is now.

What Changed in 2026 (And Why It Matters)

The single biggest shift happened in January 2026 when the $200 NFA tax stamp fee was eliminated. For decades, that fee sat atop every suppressor purchase like an unavoidable toll booth. It was not catastrophically expensive, but it added friction, it was annoying, and it felt like the government was penalizing you for wanting hearing protection. That fee is now gone. You still file an ATF Form 4 to take possession of your suppressor, but there is no longer a $200 charge attached to it. For anyone buying multiple cans, the savings add up fast.

Pair that with the dramatic improvement in ATF approval times, and the suppressor market looks completely different from what it did just a few years ago. Wait times that once stretched to 12 or even 18 months are now only a bad memory. The eForm 4 process has modernized the system in a way that actually works.

How Fast Are ATF Approvals Right Now?

This is where things get genuinely exciting. According to current approval data from Silencer Shop, individual Form 4 eForm submissions are being approved in as little as one day, with a median wait time of just five days. Trust filings are running a median of 25 days, and corporate filings are coming in around 28 days. Those numbers reflect approvals from the last 30 days and are updated daily, so they represent real-world results, not marketing copy.

To put that in context, five days for an individual filing is faster than waiting on a pair of boots to ship. The suppressor community spent years joking about wait times. Nobody is laughing about delays anymore because there really are not any. If you file as an individual, there is a reasonable chance you are picking up your can inside of a week.

Is a Suppressor Legal in Your State?

Before you go any further, confirm that suppressors are legal where you live. Silencers are currently legal in 42 states, which covers the vast majority of American gun owners. If you are in one of those states, you are cleared to move forward. A quick search for your state’s suppressor laws will give you a definitive answer in about 30 seconds.

Suppressor ownership does not require any special licensing beyond the standard NFA Form 4 process. You do not need a dealer’s license or a law enforcement connection. You need to be a legally qualified firearm owner, complete the federal approval process, and that is essentially the whole list.

Step One: Choose Your Suppressor

The first practical step is selecting the right suppressor for your intended use. This is honestly the fun part. Are you building a suppressed hunting rifle for whitetail or hogs? A rimfire can for quiet range days with a .22? A pistol suppressor for a home defense setup? Each application has specific suppressors suited to it, and the options in 2026 have never been better.

When it comes to actually picking one out, you have two solid paths. The first is shopping online through a retailer like Silencer Shop, where you can filter by caliber, size, and application, read specs side by side, and make a well-informed decision from your couch. Once you have selected your suppressor, you add it to your cart, choose your local dealer for pickup, and check out like any other online order. The suppressor ships to your chosen local gun shop, not to your door, and you collect it there after your Form 4 is approved.

The second path is walking into a local dealer in the Silencer Shop network and handling the selection process in person. With over 6,000 dealers and more than 1,500 Silencer Shop Kiosks nationwide, there is a good chance one is closer to you than you think. Seeing suppressors in person, asking questions, and getting hands-on advice from knowledgeable staff are legitimate advantages, especially for a first-time buyer who is not sure where to start. Either way, your purchase routes through the same streamlined process on the back end.

Step Two: Set Up Your Profile and Paperwork

After your purchase, you visit a Silencer Shop kiosk at your local dealer to have your fingerprints captured and your demographic information locked into your profile. You also upload a passport-style photo and set up an ATF eForms account, making sure your name, address, and email match exactly between your retailer profile and your ATF account.

This step takes about five minutes at the kiosk, and the fingerprint data stays on file permanently. If you buy a second suppressor down the road, you will not need to scan again. The system is genuinely built for repeat buyers.

You will also choose whether to file as an individual or under a gun trust. Individual filings are faster right now given current approval times. A trust makes sense if you want multiple people to have legal access to the suppressor, such as a spouse or family member. Both are valid options, and a good dealer can walk you through the decision without any pressure.

Step Three: Sign and Submit

Once your paperwork is in order, the retailer emails you the digital Form 4 for review and signature. After your dealer receives and processes the suppressor, you get a “Ready to Certify” notification. You then complete a quick certification with your dealer, either in person or remotely, and submit the eForm 4 to the ATF.

After that, you wait. But as we have already covered, that wait is now measured in days rather than months for most filers. You will receive an email from the ATF when your Form 4 is approved, at which point you head back to your dealer and pick up your suppressor.

The Bottom Line

Buying a suppressor in 2026 is simpler, cheaper, and faster than it has ever been. The $200 tax stamp is gone, ATF approvals are running in under a week for many individual filers, and the paperwork process has been streamlined into something that does not require a law degree to navigate. Whether you shop online from your living room or walk into your local dealer and handle cans until you find the one you want, the path from decision to ownership has never been this clean. If you’ve been on the fence, now is a great time to take action and enjoy the benefits of shooting suppressed.
