Lawmakers Urge Trump to Act on Second Amendment

Upset with the Trump Administration over what sometimes seems like only lip service to the Second Amendment, 33 U.S. House members have sent President Donald Trump a letter urging him to live up to his promise of restoring the Second Amendment and outlining what the next attorney general should do to win back gun owners’ support.

Led by Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Georgia, the Republican lawmakers called on Trump to take three specific actions: immediately cease enforcement of Biden-era gun rules and secure permanent—not temporary—relief, stop defending unconstitutional gun laws in court and rein in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and reform the agency’s culture.

Following detailed action items within these priorities, which require no new legislation, the lawmakers highlighted the importance of delivering these victories to gun owners across the country.

“Mr. President, American gun owners have been some of your most loyal and enthusiastic voters,” the letter stated. “They delivered for you at the ballot box, and they deserve to see their constitutional rights respected in return. The roadmap above requires no new legislation—it only requires leadership, will-power, and a Department of Justice that is genuinely committed to your agenda rather than protecting its own institutional inaction.”

The letter also stressed the lawmakers’ insistence that, with Pam Bondi’s recent exit as attorney general, the president select a new AG with the right priorities regarding the right to keep and bear arms.

“As you consider the future leadership of the Department of Justice (DOJ), we write to urge you to ensure that your next Attorney General arrives with a clear, actionable mandate to deliver the full measure of Second Amendment restoration that you promised the American people,” the letter stated. “Gun owners across this country remain energized by your Administration’s broader record, but their frustration with the pace of progress at the DOJ is real and growing. That frustration, if left unaddressed, risks dampening the grassroots enthusiasm that will be essential to retaining and growing the durable political majority you created in your sweeping 2024 election victory.”

The lawmakers wrapped up the letter by describing how the Declaration of Independence proclaims that all men are created equal with certain unalienable rights, and that the Second Amendment is the practical guardian of those God-given rights.

“When the DOJ defends unconstitutional gun regulations, and the ATF is weaponized against law-abiding Americans, the government has betrayed its founding purpose,” the letter concluded. “We urge you to ensure your next Attorney General understands that restoring the Second Amendment is not merely a policy matter—it is a fulfillment of this nation’s oldest and most sacred promise to its people. We stand ready to work with you and the next Attorney General to see these priorities enacted, and we are grateful for your continued commitment to the Second Amendment.”

In addition to Rep. Clyde, cosigners included Reps. Sheri Biggs, Russell Fry and Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Eric Burlison of Missouri, Buddy Carter and Rich McCormick of Georgia, Ben Cline, Morgan Griffith and John McGuire of Virginia,  Michael Cloud, Lance Gooden, Wesley Hunt, Keith Self and Randy Weber of Texas, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Scott DesJarlais, Andy Ogles and John Rose of Tennessee, Julie Fedorchak of North Dakota, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Pat Harrigan, Mark Harris and Addison McDowell of North Carolina, Clay Higgins of Louisiana, Young Kim of California, Tracey Mann of Kansas, Mary Miller of Illinois, Cory Mills of Florida, Riley Moore of West Virginia, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, and Adrian Smith of Nebraska.
