I don’t think I’m a Magpul fanboy, but my gun room would disagree. Between their magazines, stocks, and slings, I have a bit of it all. As I type this, a Magpul Daka wallet sits in my pocket and one of their gun belts on my waist. It’s not like I go out and buy every new Magpul release. It’s just that they tend to make products that are high quality, affordable, and often innovative. Amongst their now vast catalog, they have a few hidden gems.
These hidden gems don’t get all the press that P-MAGs and stocks get. They tend to be rather small accessories that get overlooked while being quite handy. Plus, like most of Magpul’s stuff, they tend to be affordable. Let’s look at a few of my favorite hidden gems.
Wire Control Kit
I admittedly didn’t get into the wire control thing for far too long. It turns out when you just shoot at the square range, cable management isn’t a big deal. Once I did a few classes and worked with some cover and low-light stuff, I realized that the wires needed to be managed.

When I went searching for an option, Magpul WCK, or Wire Control Kit, popped up. It’s what inspired this entire article on hidden gems. The WCK comes with six M-LOK compatible blocks that pin the wire to the handguard and allow you to direct them in the direction you want. It’s quite nice, it’s cheap, and easy to use.
Enhanced Magazine Release
Do you ever find your magazine release to be a little small? If you have small hands, or are wearing gloves, the stock standard AR magazine release might be tough to find. For about 20 bucks, Magpul offers the Enhanced Magazine Release.

It’s a big textured ramp that bolts onto a smaller piece that fills the magazine release slot. Installation is super simple, and you get a much larger magazine release. The downside being the two bolts that could come loose, so don’t forget your Loctite.
RLS Sling
As a new M1 Garand owner, I wanted to outfit the rifle with a sling. I didn’t want a tactical-style two-point, like an MS1, but something a little more traditional. This led me down the path of the Magpul Rifleman Loop Sling. It’s a simple piece of webbing that combines features of the Rhodesian sling with the 1907 match sling.

The RLS has an adjustable forward loop to help stabilize your support arm and provide tension to increase accuracy. Anyone who ever did the old Marine Corps qual is familiar with the benefits of a loop sling. The RLS just makes it a lot simpler to get that tension and dial in. It’s perfect for the M1 Garand and similar more traditional rifles.
Magpul Suppressor Cover
With suppressors being all the rage these days, people are quickly figuring out how hot they get. We are talking about bacon cooking heat in about a mag’s worth of shooting. If you’re running transition drills, you’re risking a suppressor kiss every time you drop the rifle.

A cover keeps the kiss at bay. Magpul’s Suppressor Cover is made from a mix of metal and heat-resistant polymer. It clamps over your can to provide a layer of protection and also allows for airflow to allow the suppressor to cool. It’s tested to SOCOM standards and fits suppressors that are 1.5 inches in diameter and 5.5 inches long.
It’s not just another wrap, and that’s why it’s a hidden gem.

Magpul Thumb Shelf
This one is new, so it might not be a hidden gem just yet. The Magpul thumb shelf is a tiny little device that attaches to an M-LOK slot. As the name implies, you rest your thumb on it. The end goal is to provide better recoil control. It fights muzzle rise and takes up very little space.

For me, it also acts as a constant index point. Much like a vertical grip, you can easily find your controls by placing the thumb shelf next to them. It’s not as pronounced as a vert grip, but it keeps you out of the great vert grip debate. For 20 bucks, it’s quite nice and provides decent support for very little rail space.

The Great Hidden Gem Search
Magpul makes a lot of stuff and a lot of it seemingly gets ignored for the big releases. Some of my favorite Magpul products are the smaller, cheaper products that fulfill a certain niche. These are a few of my favorites, and none of them suck too much money from my DAKA wallet.
