The former first son is swimming in debt, circled by creditors, even as he hopscotches the country for podcast sit-downs with the likes of Gavin Newsom, Nick Fuentes, and Candace Owens
Hunter Biden’s victory lap after securing a $1.7 million defamation judgment against former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne was short-lived.
Last week, a federal judge in California ordered Byrne to pay Biden for falsely accusing him of participating in an $800 million Iranian bribery scheme while his father was president. The younger Biden celebrated the decision, and accused Byrne of hiding in Dubai to evade depositions and hearings in the lawsuit.
“On Friday I was awarded $1.7M in punitive damages by a Reagan-appointed federal judge,” wrote Biden—a former crack addict who once cheated on his wife with the widow of his dead brother, Beau—in a 500-word X rant against Byrne.
The judgment would mark a substantial and much-needed windfall for Biden, whose multimillion-dollar lifestyle evaporated after his father left political office. The younger Biden, who claimed in a recent court filing to be “impecunious,” or having little or no money, made tens of millions of dollars as a lobbyist, attorney, and do-nothing board member when his father was vice president, often from foreign clients who sought the elder Biden’s political favor. Biden made hundreds of thousands of dollars selling paintings to Democratic donors when his father was commander in chief.
His world collapsed in late 2023 after the Joe Biden-appointed U.S. attorney in Delaware charged him with multiple felonies on both coasts for lying about his drug use to buy a gun and tax evasion. After he was convicted by a jury on the gun charges and pleaded guilty to the tax offenses, he received a controversial pardon from his father. But Biden, who blew his millions on drugs, prostitutes, a Porsche he totaled, gifts for his brother’s widow, and Columbia Law School tuition for his eldest daughter, was left broke and circled by creditors, ex-lawyers, and the former stripper who successfully sued him for child support.
And any hopes of a substantial cash infusion were likely dashed on Tuesday when Biden’s former attorneys at Winston Taylor (the global law firm formerly known as Winston & Strawn) filed a lien against his $1.7 million settlement to recoup legal bills that Biden has refused to pay. Biden owes the firm millions of dollars for representing him during several civil cases and during his federal tax evasion and illegal gun ownership cases.
According to Winston Taylor, Biden owes the firm “fees and costs substantially in excess” of the $1.7 million judgment amount.
Winston Taylor sued Biden in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in June 2025 over the unpaid bills. The two sides have been locked in a fight over the discovery process in the case, as well as emails and encrypted text messages Biden has refused to hand over.
Biden has offered several excuses for failing to comply with discovery requirements. He claims to be unable to afford experts to conduct a forensic search of all of his communications related to Winston Taylor. In a court filing in April, Biden’s lawyers said he is “living abroad,” though there is no evidence to support the claim.
Biden lived in southern California throughout much of his father’s presidency, as well as at the White House, where multiple news outlets reported that he took an active role in managing his father’s presidency, to the consternation of aides. Biden recently took a job at Peak Path Health, an “ultra-luxury” addiction treatment clinic in Los Angeles. And he has appeared on numerous podcasts from various U.S. locations, including Nashville (for Candace Owens), Philadelphia (for Nick Fuentes and Andrew Callaghan), and Southern California, where he may be living, for a sit-down with Gov. Gavin Newsom (and, most recently, D.J. Vlad).
In the podcast published on Tuesday, Biden was fired up. Asked what he would say to Trump were the president sitting beside him, Biden said, “I would tell him to go fuck his fucking self. That’s what I would tell him. … This man has tried to torture me for fucking 10 years. The shit that he says about my dad. … What fucking kind of man would I be if I didn’t tell him to go fuck himself?”
Winston Taylor is not the last law firm or creditor expected to grasp for Biden’s coffers.
Tuesday evening, the X account of Marco Polo, a self-styled “nonprofit investigative group” that maintained a public, searchable database of Biden’s notorious laptop, with the most explicit images selectively blurred, wrote that it is “Humorous & gratifying that even your ‘victory’ in the 2nd world CA court system is pyrrhic. All of the corrupt actors are now lining up at the trough. We take no sides bc all sides are despicable scoundrels, especially & including you & @EricEarlyX‘s firm. Have fun w collections.”
Marco Polo is believed to be run by Garrett Ziegler, a White House aide from Trump’s first term and a Byrne associate. The law firm Early Sullivan represented Biden in his lawsuit against Byrne as well as a lawsuit against Ziegler for violating Biden’s privacy. Biden voluntarily withdrew his suit against Ziegler last year, citing insufficient funds.
Biden’s current attorney and lawyers at Winston Taylor did not respond to a request for comment.
