The remark adds to a long list of socialist and virulently anti-American comments by the Democrat now in a close contest to flip a Michigan House seat
William Lawrence, running in a hotly contested House race in Michigan, called America a “shithole country” in since-deleted social media posts, the latest example of the far-left Democrat disparaging the United States.
In the January 2021 Twitter post, Lawrence fumed that “everyone is supposed to just keep showing up for work” despite the “mass dieoff” of their family members during the coronavirus pandemic. “Shithole country,” wrote Lawrence. A month earlier, the Trump administration released the first wave of coronavirus vaccines developed through Operation Warp Speed, one of the most successful public-private initiatives in the country’s history.
In another deleted tweet in May 2021, Lawrence posted an upside-down American flag, used to signal “dire distress in instances of extreme danger,” and stated that “democracy in the USA is on the brink.”
Lawrence is running against Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in one of the most closely watched races in the country. House Democrats recently added Lawrence to their “Red-to-Blue” program to help “top-tier” candidates flip GOP-held seats.
The high-profile contest has increased scrutiny of the long record of anti-American and leftist rhetoric by Lawrence, who let his Democratic Socialist party membership lapse last month.
On his podcast in 2024, Lawrence called for “destroying the American way of life” and to “redistribute all the land and all the money” to make up for America’s “evil deeds,” the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Lawrence, a Hasan Piker superfan, echoes the rhetoric of the socialist influencer. Piker has said “America deserved 9/11,” and called the United States the “absolute worst country on the face of the planet” and a “capitalist shithole.” Lawrence was caught on tape gushing over Piker backstage at a campaign event earlier this year, hailing Piker as “the man” and asking to be invited on Piker’s popular Twitch livestream. The two men had just been introduced by Abdul El-Sayed, now Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee.
On his podcast in 2024, Lawrence called for a “world without borders” and said that the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which killed six construction workers, was a “climate activist’s dream” because it choked off coal exports from the port.
In other deleted social media posts, Lawrence stated “fuck” the nuclear family, and expressed desire for a “world without police and prisons.”
Lawrence launched his campaign last August at an event with a convicted pedophile who served 14 years in prison for raping his 12-year-old half-sister. Lawrence also employed the man, Deshawn Bailey, at his tenants union, the Rent is Too Damn High, the Free Beacon reported. Bailey is Lawrence’s neighbor, living about a block away from the candidate’s house in Lansing.
Lawrence’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
