Luke Bryan has a bone to pick with his haters.
During an appearance on the “This Past Weekend with Theo Von” podcast, the “American Idol” judge and country star opened up about the backlash surrounding his latest song, “Fish Hunt Golf Drink,” which some social media users accused of being created with artificial intelligence.
Bryan said the controversy began with a “narrative” that was created and amplified online.

“That’s the crazy thing about where we’re at with social [media],” he said. “They started a narrative that we AI-ed it. And now whether you like the song or not, or whether you like me as an artist, whether you like what I’m about or whatever … now I’m the guy that somebody said that I AI-ed a song and wrote it.”
He complained, “You get one or two kids with a bunch of Instagram, a bunch of followers, that say we AI-ed it, and then the whole world goes on their narrative.”

Von argued that he doesn’t think people actually believe he used AI to create the song, but Bryan said that the backlash has been “pretty crazy,” and he recalled seeing posts from people who told him they hated him.
“And they’re like at a camera going, ‘I hate you.’ … And I’m like, ‘I can see your face. If I see you one day, I’m going to f—ing knock the s— out of you, dude,’” he said.
However, Bryan acknowledged that many of the online comments were coming from teenagers.

“But then I’m like, well, wait. I’m not sure I’m happy about a bunch of teenagers telling a 50-year-old man he’s a piece of s— songwriter,” he said. “And then I’m like, ‘Dude, you’re 16. You’re talking to a grown man who’s made a s— ton of money doing this.'”
“It’s just so far out there,” he added. “I’m like, if I caught my kids doing some stuff like that, I would kill them.”
Earlier this year, Bryan addressed the AI accusations shortly after the song’s release.

“We’ve had some negativity out there. Some trolls kind of saying that I ‘AI-ed’ it, which is completely false,” he told NBC4 at the Memorial Pro-Am on June 3.
“That song was designed for one thing,” he added. “To have fun and tell the world what I love to do and what I strive to do.”
Songwriter Chase McGill and Matt Dragstrem also shut down the false narrative during an interview with Rolling Stone.
“[Bryan] is the least artificial person I’ve ever met,” McGill said. “The only way I’ve actually succeeded in country music, ever, is by sitting in the room with good friends and enjoying making the song up that day. I don’t believe that I would feel any fulfillment from saying, ‘AI, write me a song about whatever.’ That’s not what I signed up for.”
The idea behind the song came up organically, said McGill.
“Luke was texting one of his buddies, and the guy was like, ‘Let’s hang soon,’” he said. “Luke sent him an emoji of a fish, an emoji of a deer, an emoji of a golf club and a beer emoji, and said, ‘You pick which one.’ Then he showed it to us. He was like, ‘Dude, this could be a cool song.’”

“The dude loves to have fun. He can outfish most people I know, he’s awesome in the woods, I hear he’s really good at golfing,” McGill continued. “And the dude can drink pretty well.”
