‘Nixon’s failure … was no mere oversight but constitutes a knowing and willful filing of false financial disclosure reports,’ wrote the National Legal and Policy Center
An ethics watchdog group filed a criminal referral to Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday demanding an investigation into Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon for allegedly filing a false financial disclosure to the Senate in violation of the Ethics in Government Act.
Nixon, who earned at least $270,000 from her various jobs and investments in 2025, reported in her financial disclosures—submitted to the State of Florida on August 31 in her capacity as a state lawmaker—that she owes nearly $14,000 in unpaid taxes to the IRS on top of $17,600 in unpaid federal student loans, the Washington Free Beacon reported. Nixon’s tax and student loan delinquency would be news to anyone who reviewed the other financial disclosure she filed on August 31 with the U.S. Senate, which omitted any reference to those debts.
Nixon’s omission from her Senate financial disclosure could land her on the wrong side of federal laws that require candidates to publicly disclose any debts over $10,000, according to the National Legal and Policy Center, the conservative ethics watchdog group that filed the criminal referral to Blanche on Wednesday.
“It’s clear that Nixon’s failure to list the two liabilities was no mere oversight but constitutes a knowing and willful filing of false financial disclosure reports,” the National Legal and Policy Center wrote in its complaint, adding that it “demands prompt civil and criminal enforcement against Angie Nixon for her flagrant violations of the Ethics in Government Act’s financial disclosure requirements.”
Though Nixon, a dues-paying Democratic Socialist who wants to institute a 5 percent annual wealth tax on billionaires, omitted her tax and student loan delinquency from her Senate financial disclosure report, she hasn’t shied away from talking about the debts in public. During a podcast interview in July, Nixon lamented the injustice of being on a payment plan to pay her back taxes after raking in well over five times the median income of the average American in 2025.
“Your girl over here is on a payment plan to pay the IRS $12,000 back,” Nixon said during a podcast interview in July. “And listen, I ain’t made $105 billion, but you making me pay $12,000 to the feds? Like, really? That’s what we’re doing? And they already took some of the taxes away anyway. I paid over $10,000. It’s just, it is crazy.”
And as for her unpaid student loan debt, Nixon has declared she won’t repay it.
In October 2024, when Congress ended the pandemic-era student loan moratorium, Nixon declared on Facebook she was “above” paying back her educational debts.
“Dear Student Loans. It’s above me now,” Nixon wrote. “I don’t wanna pay it back. Education supposed to be free.”
Nixon won her primary in August in a shock upset over establishment Democrat Alex Vindman despite being outspent 16 to 1. She now faces an uphill battle against incumbent GOP senator Ashley Moody in a special election to close out the term of the seat previously held by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which started in January 2023. A poll released Tuesday found Nixon trailing Moody by 7 points.
The Nixon campaign did not return a request for comment.
