How They Work
In order to produce fire, you need two components: the spark creator and the spark receiver (tinder) that ultimately creates a flame. The Firecard is highly flammable and can take a flame as-is if needed. However, to create fire with this combo, the card needs to be shaved down to create a pile of tinder-like material. This is what will receive the sparks from the necklace.
As for the necklace, you simply use the ceramic striker pendant to scrape the Ferro rod to produce a shower of sparks. These sparks, directly to your Firecard, should create a flame within seconds. It sounds simple, but I’ll see for myself as I put them to the test.

Going Through the Motions
Just to see for myself, I used a lighter on one of the Firecards (they come in a pack of three), and as it stated, it caught fire immediately and produced a large flame. I then used my knife to scrape the card’s edge into a small pile. This was both fast and effortless, as it took no time to shave down a portion of the card. Within thirty seconds or so, I had a ready-to-ignite mound of flammable shavings.

As for the Spark Necklace, I merely had to slide down the cordage, so the Ferro rod and the striker were easily held in each of my hands. I practiced a few strikes away from my pile of tinder and the sparks flew. Again, like the card, there was no struggle or hassle to make the necklace work as intended.

First Attempt
So, what happened when the sparks hit the pile of shaved Firecard? Impressively, the mound ignited, and a small fire was produced that could instantly take some small twigs and grow from there. The learning curve for both of these fire ingredients was quick and nearly foolproof.
I only had to make two adjustments to maximize my result. The first was perfecting the angle of my strikes against the Ferro rod. The second involved gauging the proper distance between my striker and the mound of tinder. Once corrected, everything else fell into place flawlessly.
