Unplugging To Reconnect – Survivopedia

I used to think screens were simply tools.

A phone helped me check the weather. A tablet kept the children occupied. The television helped everyone relax. Online banking, maps, messages, videos, and shopping made daily life easier.

Then I started noticing how often we reached for a screen without making a decision.

A quiet moment appeared, and somebody opened an app. A meal ended, and everyone drifted toward separate devices. A child became bored and immediately asked for a video. I checked one message and found myself reading news twenty minutes later.

That bothered me.

Preparedness is supposed to make a family more capable and attentive. Constant screen use can pull a household in the opposite direction. It can weaken patience, conversation, memory, navigation skills, practical judgment, and the ability to sit quietly without needing entertainment.

A digital fast gives a family a chance to see that dependence clearly.

1. Start With One Screen-Free Day

I recommend beginning with one full day.

Choose a Saturday, Sunday, or another day when work and school demands are low. Tell the family ahead of time so nobody feels ambushed. Explain that the goal is to spend time together and learn how much of daily life depends on digital systems.

Decide which devices are included. Phones, tablets, computers, televisions, gaming systems, smart speakers, and watches may all count.

Keep one phone turned off or placed in a drawer for genuine emergencies. A digital fast should strengthen the family without cutting off access to urgent help.

Write down important phone numbers before the day begins. Print directions if you plan to travel. Tell close relatives that you may not respond immediately.

Preparation removes many excuses.

2. Expect Some Resistance

The first few hours may feel strange.

Children may complain that they are bored. Adults may reach for their phones without thinking. Someone may worry about missing a message. The house may feel unusually quiet.

That discomfort is useful.

It reveals habits that normally remain hidden. I have caught myself checking an empty pocket even though I knew the phone was in another room. That reaction showed me how automatic the behavior had become.

Do not fill every silent moment immediately. Give everyone time to adjust. Boredom often appears just before imagination, conversation, or useful work begins.

The family may become irritable at first. Stay patient. The goal is not to punish anyone.

3. Make A Simple Plan For The Day

A screen-free day works better when the family has a loose plan.

Start with breakfast together. Cook something that requires participation, such as pancakes, biscuits, eggs, or oatmeal with several toppings. Give everyone a job.

After breakfast, move into practical work. Tend the garden, organize a pantry shelf, repair something simple, wash the car, stack wood, clean tools, or practice an emergency skill.

Leave room for rest too.

Take a walk. Read aloud. Play cards. Work on a puzzle. Bake bread. Visit a neighbor. Go fishing. Write letters. Let the children build a fort, draw maps, make up games, or help prepare supper.

The day does not need to become a packed schedule. Families also need to relearn how to spend unhurried time together.

4. Cook Without Digital Help

One of the most revealing exercises is preparing a meal without online recipes, delivery apps, or cooking videos.

Use a printed cookbook, a family recipe, or what you already know. Let the children help choose a meal from pantry ingredients.

This can expose a real preparedness weakness. Many people have food stored but depend on the internet to tell them how to use it. They own beans, flour, rice, canned meat, and oats but have no printed instructions for cooking them.

Write down the recipes your family uses most. Keep them in a kitchen binder.

Knowledge stored only online may disappear when the power or network fails.

5. Practice Finding Your Way Without GPS

If you leave the house, take a paper map.

Choose a familiar destination and let an older child help plan the route. Notice street names, landmarks, bridges, fuel stations, and alternate roads.

GPS is useful, but it allows us to move without truly learning the area. During an outage, evacuation, network failure, or emergency detour, that can become a serious problem.

A digital fast is a safe time to practice navigation while conditions are calm.

You may discover that family members do not know how to reach home, church, school, or a relative’s house without a phone giving instructions.

That is worth correcting.

6. Bring Conversation Back To The Table

Meals feel different when no device is nearby.

At first, conversation may be slow. That is normal. Ask simple questions.

What was the best part of the week?

What should we improve around the house?

What skill would everyone like to learn?

What family story have the children never heard?

Give each person time to answer.

A family can live in the same house and still lose track of one another. Screens make it easy to occupy the same room while giving attention somewhere else.

A digital fast returns attention to the people at the table.

7. Add Prayer And Quiet

I also use the day to create more room for prayer, Scripture, and quiet reflection.

Without constant notifications, the mind begins to settle. A family can pray together without rushing. Parents can listen more carefully to what children are worried about. Everyone can give thanks for things that usually pass unnoticed.

Silence may feel uncomfortable at first. Stay with it.

Prepared people need the ability to think calmly. A mind trained to demand constant stimulation may struggle when a real emergency becomes slow, uncertain, and boring.

Quiet is a useful skill.

8. Try A Full Week Later

After one successful day, consider a longer fast.

A full week does not need to remove every necessary use of technology. Adults may need devices for work, banking, or communication. Set clear windows for those tasks, then put the devices away.

Remove entertainment screens for the week. Avoid social media, online shopping, gaming, unnecessary videos, and constant news checking.

The longer test reveals more.

You may notice better sleep, longer conversations, calmer children, more completed projects, and greater patience. You may also discover that some family routines depend heavily on apps, cloud files, smart devices, and digital reminders.

Write those weak points down.

9. Keep The Lessons That Matter

The goal is not to throw every device away.

Technology can serve a household well. The problem begins when the household can no longer function comfortably without it.

After the fast, decide what should change. Keep phones away from meals. Create one screen-free evening each week. Charge devices outside bedrooms. Print important records and recipes. Keep paper maps and written contacts. Replace some online entertainment with family work, reading, and outdoor time.

Small boundaries can preserve the benefits of technology without letting it control the home.

10. Find Out Where Your Attention Belongs

A digital fast shows a family what it has been missing.

It reveals how quickly we become restless, how often we avoid conversation, and how much knowledge we have handed over to devices. It also reveals what returns when the screens go dark.

People talk. Children invent games. Work gets finished. Meals last longer. Prayer becomes less hurried. The home feels quieter.

I still use digital tools. I simply do not want them to receive the best attention my family has to give.

Turn them off for a day.

You may discover that your household feels more alive when the screens are dark.
