The PRO S.E.M.A Competition Backpack offers the trifecta of durability, functionality, and ultimate organization of your pistols. This pack is much more than a carry-all to and from the range. It’s an intricate system to keep your pistols safe and secure, along with all your complementary gear. The good people at Savior Equipment (SaviourEquipment.com) presented me with a pack and told me to run it through the ringer. They were highly confident that it would stand up to intense in-the-field testing and earn my respect as a complete carry system. It accomplished this and then some, as I dug deep into this pack’s amazing amenities.
Unpacking the Pack
Straight out of the box I knew I was in for something special. Th rigidity of the pack was noticeable instantly. Unlike collapsible packs that flops about when empty, the PRO S.E.M.A Backpack had firm stability when set down and held its shape before I even added one item. I also underestimated the size of the pack. I thought filler or packing material was inside the shipping box, but I was entirely wrong. The pack filled the large box without any added fluff. It fully embraced its dimensions of 21” x 16” x 11”. The thickness of the pack is its most notable distinction when compared to more common backpacks. At nearly a foot thick, I was very curious what specialized features the S.E.M.A Competition Backpack had to offer.

Its Hardcore Framework
Rugged is the word I would use to describe the S.E.M.A Competition Backpack. Its exterior shell is created from 1680D Ballistic nylon, with 420D nylon gracing its vast interior walls. It offers a polymer frame that keeps it as lightweight as possible, as your gear and pistols will put on the pounds rather quickly. The unit features Saviour’s own KAM lockable zippers (a must with firearm bags) and UTX hardware throughout the backpack. The shoulder straps were secured with double stitching, no doubt needed when carrying a hefty load. Specs are great to learn the material used, but that’s inconsequential if it doesn’t hold up during real-time use. I tugged the material; I pulled all the zippers and handle. I swung it about by a single strap and it showed no signs of failure. Empty it held together. It was time to load it up.

Specialized Bells and Whistles
This product is definitely a pistol carrier that takes the form of a backpack, rather than a backpack used to carry firearms. It’s specialized to do the job perfectly. Its main feature is its side-accessible, three-pistol compartment. This feature offers three padded and removable pouches, each with a writable identification patch. Each pouch is individually lockable. The compartment was easy to access and all zippers opened and closed smoothly and without the slightest sticking, even around corners. This interior core boasts an ultra-strong framework that surrounds the pistol compartment. At the top of the pack was another lockable compartment that opened wide and revealed plenty of internal storage space. An additional front panel pocket and various side pouches were available for more storage, along with zippered mesh pockets throughout. It seemed the more I explored the amenities of the S.E.M.A Backpack, the more I found.

Carry-ability and Ease-of-Use
With the pack loaded and ready to go, I slung it over my shoulder. The straps held fine, but what was slightly lacking for my comfort was much-needed strap padding. This was the first and only drawback I found with the S.E.M.A Competition Backpack. With such substantial weight on your back, an inch or more of padding would make such a difference. Aside from that the carry was balanced and stable. Quick access to the pistols and gear was an understatement, as just a simple zipper-pull here and there opened the compartments. It must be noted that the top-carry handle could also have benefited from better padding and a thicker girth. Like the shoulder straps, with such a large footprint and heavy load, the carry handle would be a bit of a burden to hold.

Too Good to Pass Up
Overall, the S.E.M.A Competition Backpack is an incredible pistol and gear carrier. Though it emulates a common backpack, once explored and carried-about you’ll realize it’s much more. From its locking compartments to its overall size and rigidness when it counts, you’re valuable load will be protected from others, as well as the elements. The pack retails for $279.97 and is available in Obsidian Black, OD Green, and Dark FDE colors. No matter if you compete or not, this backpack is a definite must-have. It certainly is much more than meets the eye, and you’ll find this out on your next outing to the range.
